Racist Mailers Used In Phoenix, Arizona City Council Race
We recently were tipped off at News Taco about a series of racially tinged mailers in a Phoenix City Council race. The race is for District 5 and the candidates involved are Daniel Valenzuela and Eric Sloan and a few mailers went out recently that highlight, on the surface, the political differences between the two, but the underlying statement is inherently racist.
Here’s the one for Daniel Valenzuela:
Here’s the one for Eric Sloan:
Let’s take these two point by point:
- The black background versus the white background
- The red versus the blue
- The dark photo versus the light photo
- The photo made to look like a criminal’s photo versus the professional photo
- “Dangerous” versus “Right”
- The idea of out of control versus in control
And there’s a lot more you could say. Our chisme is that the mailers were sent to white Republicans in Phoenix, and that this district has a history of seeing race used as a wedge issue. The election is set for August 30. So what do you think, did the mailers miss the mark?
