How To Wear Loud 1950s Patterns
As you may recall from my post last week, I’m on something of a 1950s style kick. Well in addition to wearing great dresses, women wore clothes to be bold and to break boundaries.
They added pants into their wardrobes, started dressing more casually, and they also birthed bubbly patterns. Check out how to turn this last fifties trend into a wearable summer look now.
The Trend
The fifties were all about stripes, florals, and polka dots. So if you’re looking for something fun to add to your wardrobe, or something small to perk a plain outfit, think these three patterns.
How To Style It
While fashionistas in the fifties inspired these patterns, fashionistas today are combining two (or more) of these patterns in one outfit. There are a few tricks to mixing and matching patterns so that you don’t look foolish.

First, start with one pattern, and style your outfit around it. Too many competing patterns will look chaotic. So if you have one bold pattern, try mixing it with something more subtle (middle).
Second, your outfit should have no more than a few colors. These colors should compliment each other, like reds and greens (left), yellows and purples, or oranges and blues (right). After you have two to three colors in your outfit, stay neutral (white or beige) for the rest of the pieces in your outfit.
Finally, don’t over-accessorize. Pull simple accessories in solids from your color palette. And do not be afraid to go neutral (like gold or silver) or go without if you feel you’re over-doing it.
Happy mixing!
