Latinos In Social Media Work To Promote Latino Empowerment
Latinos In Social Media, or #latism if you’re on Twitter, is an organization that started out as a meeting place for Latino media professionals and has evolved into an organization set to promote the economic, education and civil empowerment of Latinos, according to Vice-Chair of Communications and PR Elianne Ramos.
Latism started with a tweet, and just as appropriately, the organization has grown via social media into one that is now sponsoring several conferences this year. Ramos says the group not only works on scholarships and book drives, but also brings in top opinion leaders and professionals to work on all levels of society for Latinos.
The organization’s stated goals include everything from influencing Latinos in social media, fostering leadership, provide networking and support, help Latino businesses, getting Latinos into professional pipelines and generally encouraging Latinos to use technology.
In 2011 Latism will sponsor a conference in Silicon Valley, California on June 11, another in Central California on October 29, and the signature event will be in November. The Latism Annual National Conference will take place in Chicago, Illinois from November 10 to 12.
Latism is for anyone who considers themselves a Latino in any industry or profession, Ramos says, and the number of member could be as high as thousands. The organization only recently began a registration profess, but the #latism hashtag sees more than 10 million impressions a day.
