Tu Mamá Te Dijo: More Fiber, Better Health

A new report confirms what mothers and wives everywhere have been saying for years: ¡Come más fibra! In actuality what the report says is that eating a diet rich in fiber lowers the risk of heart disease, infectious and respiratory illness. There’s less of a risk for cancer death for men and benefits were especially strong when it came to diabetes and heart disease — huge issues for Latinos in the U.S.

More fiber in the study, which appeared in the Archives of Internal Medicine, was found to improve cholesterol levels, blood pressure, inflammation and blood sugar. It’s though that fiber’s benefits derive from its ability to move toxins out of the body more quickly, which may also be why fiber helps people lose weight.

Finally, adding fiber to your diet may help your body fight off pneumonia and the flu. The study looked at fiber found in grains in particular — that’s from things like whole wheat bread — but eating other things, such as vegetables, that have fiber may also be beneficial.

We’ve written about eating healthy several times on NewsTaco, particularly as it pertains to nopales, and since diabetes is such a big issue for Latinos, we hope that this study will sway some of us to consider adding fiber to their diet.
