Latinos Answer to Possible Social Security Cuts
A coalition of Latino groups says it has a formula to save Social Security for elderly Latinos. They call themselves Latinos for a Secure Retirement and they have what some people think are sensible proposals to go with their sensible name. Some of the notables in the group, League of United Latin American Citizens, the American GI Forum, the National Hispanic Council on Aging, the Institute for the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Elderly, and the Hispanic Federation, say their goals are long-term. According to Fox News Latino their aim is to
“ensure the sustainability and solvency of Social Security for the next 75 years and beyond without any cuts to benefits or increase in the retirement age.”
And among their proposals:
- raise the tax cap over 10 years to cover 90 percent of earnings
- cover local and state government employees
- treat all salary reduction plans like 401K plans
- have a special minimum benefit for low-wage workers who have worked long years
- increase legal immigration
I love how they slipped that last one into the list, but it makes sense because there would be more workers contributing legally to the system and benefiting, short and log term, all retirees.
The fact is that Social Security and other entitlements are being eyed as possible targets for budget reducing cuts on Capitol Hill, and the coalition wants to make sure that Latinos are as represented in the debate as they will be in the effects of the budget reductions.
