Democratic Arizona Congresswoman, 18 Others, Shot

This morning Democratic Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others were shot this morning at a Safeway in Tucson. The AP has identified the shooter at a 22 year-old  named Jared Laughner. Lots of information is still pending, a federal judge and Giffords’ staff members were shot. She’s been in surgery, she was shot in the head.

Giffords apparently just beat a Tea Party candidate in November and Fox News interviewed a friend of hers who said she got a lot of flack from the Tea Party recently. This was not the first time a gun appeared at one of her meet-and-greet events. She had just begun her third term.

A news conference from the hospital: 11 patients, 1 died, 5 in critical condition, 5 in the operating room and the rest stable. She’s in critical condition, shot in the head, the head surgeon says he’s optimistic about recovery. The dead person is a young child, a 9 year-old girl.

Gifford was shot through and through once in the head. I’m about as optimistic as you can get in this situation, the surgeon said. She’s to recover in the intensive care unit.
