Soap Operas Are Only Trashy When Latinos Do Them

Running up to the DREAM Act debate in the U.S. Senate everyone knew a lot of Latinos would be watching. The Daily Kos’ version of this was tinged with a little disdain for Latinos generally, but the “schlock and crap” that appears on Latino programming. What do I mean you ask?

Right before the vote this is what The Daily Kos ran:

“Univision über anchor Jorge Ramos has confirmed on twitter that his network will be providing live coverage of the DREAM Act vote on Saturday. Rival network Telemundo is supposed to do the same. This is unprecedented. Anyone who knows a lick about these two networks knows their programming is full of schlock and crap — a never-ending parade of shock ‘news’ shows, celebrity gossip, and trashy soap operas. For them to break into their regular programming to cover a Senate vote is a sign that the DREAM vote is proof of the importance of this vote to the Latino community.”

Does this seem somewhat racist to anyone else but me? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’ve definitely enjoyed some Judge Judy, “General Hospital,” Jerry Springer, “Young and the Restless” and similar daytime programming on U.S. networks in my day. Do these not qualify exactly as “schlock and crap”?

My only question is, why is it “crap” when it’s in Spanish but not in English? And these are the “liberals” folks! Thoughts?
