Thoughts On Obama’s Meeting With The Hispanic Caucus
President Barack Obama was set to meet with leaders of the Hispanic Caucus today, hopefully they’ll have a nice conversation that hovers around why the Democratic Party is failing Latinos by not giving them a fair share of candidacies.
Specifically, The Washington Post reports that the president was set to meet with New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez, and Representatives Nydia Velazquez of New York and Luis Gutierrez of Illinois.
Here’s how I hope the conversation goes. After thank yous all around, the aforementioned politicos will inform the president that as the leader of the Democratic Party he needs to try harder to push the party towards more substantive inclusion of Latinos at all levels.
It’s simply NOT enough to thank Latino voters every election cycle, throw in a few Spanish language ads, eat a few tacos (with mandatory photo ops) and then move on. I want to see Latinos ingrained and integral in the fundraising, campaigning, candidacy and post-electoral bureaucracy. So that when the president and others thank Latino voters for their support — those voters will be able to tell that they MEAN what they say.
