Texas adopts deportation program
While the immigration debate has been focused on Arizona and its SB1070 there are developments across the country that merit more than a passing glance. Case in point, a federal program called Secure Communities. Here’s what it does: according to the Wall Street Journal “The program automatically routes prisoners’ fingerprints to the (Homeland Security) department, which tries to determine whether they are allowed to be in the U.S.”
The intent is to filter and deport undocumented criminals who have committed serious crimes, but the outcome, according to opponents of the program, could clog the courts and single out persons who have committed minor crimes.
Texas (of course!!!) is the first border state to fully deploy the program.
The question we can’t ignore these days is: will this program alienate Latino voters from the Obama administration?
